Does SEO Even Matter Anymore?

Or has it become just an over hyped, over priced way of driving traffic to your websites & funnels?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization. A concept thrown about by most marketing “gurus” who want you to pay them to get your page rankings up. In doing so, more people will stumble upon your page organically and buy from you. Or so that’s the idea.

Maybe 15 years ago, SEO was essential to any business and their marketing. Have a logo? Check. A website? Check. SEO? Check.

But since? Not at all essential. I’ve worked with and for successful businesses who do zero SEO. Ok, so they’d do a few key words on their pages but that is it and that certainly doesn’t constitute SEO.

SEO is a complex monster which many gurus would tell you not to worry about understanding. Just pay them thousands of dollars, and they’ll sort the rest for you. Eventually.

You see, SEO is a long term strategy. You won’t be ranking high on Google in a matter of days. Not unless you have no competition. But in the 21st-century, competition is ripe in all industries and all niches.

And better yet, even with good SEO your business will still become buried under competitors who can do more. So your investment in SEO may become a waste, and your guru will expect you to be appreciative for them moving your website from page 7 of Google to pay 6.

But I know what you’re thinking, if SEO is not that great an option how else can I get my business ranking high and driving traffic to my website?

If not SEO, then what?

It’s a great point, and one which I’ll answer in two parts.

Firstly, let’s look at Google rankings. This is the main goal of SEO, right? Ranking higher in Google leads to more traffic, and more traffic leads to more customers (in theory!).

So if you don’t use SEO to achieve this, how else can you? Pay Per Click (PPC) Ads, and specifically Google Ads. These are ads that allow your business to show at the very top of a search page (even above the no.1 ranked website) for certain search terms.

Of all of the space to be on Google, this is the prime real estate. And you don’t need to invest thousands in SEO “gurus” who may or may not help you rank higher. And even if they do, it’s a long term project — weeks, months, maybe even years (yes really!).

But with a bit of training, your business can have Google Ads running in 30 minutes or less.

And wait, I know your next thought. To run ads above even the no.1 ranked website for a search term, it must cost a bomb, right?


With the right training, and more importantly action on that training, you can start running ads that get you very cheap clicks. I’m talking 1 cents or less, or 1 penny or less for those readers who like me are in the UK!

So Google Ads take less time, don’t cost much to get clicks, and allows you to advertise your website above your big competitors who are ranked no.1.

All of this makes Google Ads a vastly superior option to SEO.

But it doesn’t end there. Oh no.

There are more alternatives to SEO — that are again fast and cost-effective in comparison.

Driving Traffic

So the ultimate goal of SEO is to drive traffic to your website or funnels. But you don’t need to rely on Google and other search engines to do this.

Other PPC Ads on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Linkedin and Twitter — allow you to generate significant traffic to your website or funnel. Again, with a bit of training and practice you can be running targeted ads on these platforms in no time. And the costs again are tiny. Clicks for cents or pennies.

Now I know what you’re thinking, and I know because I’d think it too.

Google Ads make sense because they show depending on what people search so the ads are targeted to the right people.

Other PPC ads aren't, are they?

Social media are not search engines, but that doesn’t mean running PPC ads on them leads to poorly targeted traffic. All of the ad platforms allow precise targeting of only your most relevant and applicable target audiences.

How this works is different for each platform.

Facebook for example. You can run ads based upon users interests and demographics. You can even run ads to precise audiences of email addresses you upload, and run lookalike ads to these people. Lookalikes are people who have similar demographics & interests to your uploaded list.

Youtube works differently. You can choose which kinds of videos to advertise on. For example, if you were an Accountancy you could run ads for your business on videos on business & corporation tax. And you wouldn’t advertise on videos like kids cartoons.

So all of these social media PPC ad options are just as good as Google Ads.

And most importantly, both social media PPC and Google Ads are both vastly superior options to the outdated practice that is SEO.

Stop focusing on your SEO, and instead focus on driving cost-effective & targeted traffic via PPC ads.
